Bali, The Island of the Gods

It is no doubt that Bali is one of the most loved destinations by travelers from different parts of the globe. It is even told that Australians & the Kiwis loved the place so much they will return to it more than 10 to 20 times in their lifetime. It is called “photographers ‘paradise.” And why not – here you could capture glorious sunsets, breathtaking views and heavenly beaches.

Who haven’t watched the romantic comedy drama Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts? At the last part of the film (Love), scenes were shot at magical Ubud and Padang Padang Beach in South Kuta.  Do you still remember that rice paddy scene where she was riding her bicycle just before meeting her one true love? It was almost zen-like. And her walks towards the village were so serene that anyone wants that kind of ‘’everyday.’’ And that bar scene? That was so refreshing it can be the perfect moment to meet friends, connect with others or just simply sit, sip and be in the present moment. Don’t forget to play the same song - Gotta Have It by Marvin Gaye though. But wait... Bali is more than that.

I think it is the Balinese civilization that sets Bali apart from other destinations. The people are guided by the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana which when translated means “three causes of well-being.” It highlights the spiritual relationship between human, God & nature.

Where to Stay

Bali offers 3000++ resorts, villas, hotels & other types of accommodation.

Kuta & Legian (southwest – closest to the airport) is the most advanced & developed. If you want to shop, party and look for a pumping nightlife, then this might just be for you. Just prepare yourself for the crowd’s buzz day and night. It is most popular among surfers & backpackers. There are many budget accommodations in the area but nowadays there are others who offer that extra luxury for more discerning travelers.  Sanur on the other hand is the quieter version of Kuta. There are little beautiful restaurants overlooking the beach. It is believed to be the oldest region. The place offers midrange accommodation with lovely beachfront hotels.

Ubud (central) – famous for traditional Bali culture, basically the arts and crafts hub & is the heartbeat of the island. Are you a fan of traditional dances? Then head to Ubud. Get to experience losmen – or the family run accommodation suitable for backpackers. This is great place for soul searchers & for those seeking spiritual enlightenment. The world’s most upscale hotel chains have built accommodations around the mountains thus offering visitors the most overwhelming view you’ll ever see.

Bali was once part of Java but was separated by the Bali Strait. It is the only surviving Hindu society in Indonesia.

Kopi luwak is the world's rarest coffee as it is taken from the feces of the Civet which had eaten coffee berries. It is bought in Bali but is not allowed to be brought into Australia

Seminyak (southwest) is more sophisticated & polished. You can choose from lots of villas for short term or long term stay. World class restaurants at affordable prices are a gem here. You’ll also find nice boutiques with fixed prices and is a great place for families travelling together as there are lots of activities for kids too. You can even hire nannies at reasonable prices. If you want a peaceful & tranquil stay – Seminyak is the place for you.

Trip Advisor's Travellers Choice 2014 - 2nd Best Island in Asia

Jimbaran & Uluwatu (bukit southwest) – are you a lover of beaches, sunsets or surfing? Then you’ll find your haven in Uluwatu. Home of the beautiful beach of Kerondangan & Jimbaran.  Perfect for travelers on a budget.

What you‘ll love about Bali is that you’ll receive more service and more of the facilities than what you will get from other countries such as US, Japan or Singapore with the same price. And of course the friendly and warm Balinese people are known for their heartfelt smiles to everyone. I‘ve read from a blog that they even leave flowers on the street as offerings. So go ahead – pack your bags and head to Bali - who knows.. you might find your balance here.
